The Pursuit of Happiness

September! The time of year that is linked forever with starting new classes, learning, growing and setting new goals. Or perhaps you’re someone who used to start a new school year and already look forward to completing it in June. Are you always looking toward the end of something for the result?

Do you believe that when you have the thing you’ll feel the feeling?

Is the feeling you want happiness?

What if, rather than achieving a goal the actual point of goal setting is to learn how to achieve it?

Nowhere in The Declaration of Independence does it say we are entitled to have happiness – it enshrines our right to pursue it. We’re the ones who over time have decided that the point of life is to be happy and the way to be happy is to have things.

It seems to me that we might spend much more time pursuing things than we spend having gotten them. Doesn’t that mean that we’re not happy most of the time? What if you decide to enjoy the process of achieving them, how much would that change your outlook on life!

Have you ever pursued a goal and finally achieved it? What happened? What did you think abut that shiny, sparkly thing once you hung it on the wall or in the closet or parked it in the driveway?

How do you feel since you’ve gotten used to walking into that corner office, become accustomed to seeing that ring on your finger, set your alarm for the 100th 2am feeding?

For how long afterward were you actively happy in the having? Once you got accustomed to it did you start to feel just like you did before, that it was just you living your regular life? Yeah, I know, it’s a bummer when that happens – you think you’ll feel totally different, better, happier – that your life will be perfect – over there, and then you learn it’s not so different after all. There’s no magical there over there.

What if the actual goal of setting a goal can be achieving the growth that comes during the process of going after it? What do you have to learn, how do you have to grow, who do you have to become in order to really be ready for it once you get it?

How much would that change your life experience, your experience of your life?

It seems to me that you would actually be achieving your goal all the time simply by being and doing. And wouldn’t that make you happy!
